Visual Music Project – Spring 2009 from Simeon Poulin on Vimeo.
This was a collaboration with motion, game, and web designer Simeon Poulin that took place in May of 2008. The project centered loosely around the notion of bringing life to that which lacks life. This was accomplished musically by literally bringing ‘life’ to a ‘dead’ piano Simeon found in an abandoned Brooklyn warehouse- yet another symbol of the lifeless, that of America’s murdered manufacturing base. By making a recording of each key, and then mapping said recordings into MIDI, we created a means to play with this piano in a studio setting. The resulting piece contains three components, the MIDI piano, a standard grand piano, and electronic elements. The electronic elements are all derived from isolated sound events produced by the MIDI piano, later transformed with the audio analysis, editing and synthesis program, Spear. The video elements were all compiled, edited and produced by Simeon Poulin.
